Deplin Medication

Deplin (I-Methylfolate)

Folate is one of the members of vitamin B which is found naturally in some of the foods. Folic acid is the artificial counterpart of folate, which is added to processed foods, vitamins or mineral supplements. Folate I essential in the formation of healthy body cells especially red blood cells.

Deplin generic comes as L-methylfolate, levometfolate or methyltetrahydrofolate. They are used to prevent or treat low folic acid levels. Low folate levels usually manifest as different types of anemias and are seen in pregnancy, poor diet, alcoholism, liver disease, stomach/intestinal problems and kidney dialysis. Childbearing women must be given folic acid to prevent infant spinal cord birth defects.

Deplin is also used in people with the major depressive disorder, who are suffering from folate deficiency.

People with schizophrenia, who have hyperhomocysteinemia, a condition in which related amino acid increases due to folate deficiency, are also treated with Deplin to treat the deficiency.

Deplin is not an antipsychotic or an anti-depressant drug, although it might enhance the effects of the latter drugs.
