High blood pressure

  • Adults: The typical dose is 25 mg to 100 mg by mouth once a day.
  • Children 6 years and older: The dose is based on your child’s weight. The typical starting dose is 1 mg/kg of body weight by mouth once a day.

Chest pain: The typical dose is 100 mg by mouth once a day.

Heart failure: The typical starting dose is 12.5 mg to 25 mg by mouth once a day.

What’s the difference between metoprolol tartrate (Lopressor) and metoprolol succinate (Toprol XL)?

Metoprolol tartrate (Lopressor) is an immediate-release tablet, which means that it gets released quickly into your body after it’s taken and doesn’t stay in your body very long. This is why you have to take metoprolol tartrate (Lopressor) several times per day. On the other hand, medication is an extended-release tablet that stays in your body for a longer period of time. Because of this, you only need to take metoprolol succinate (Toprol XL) once a day. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can make you drowsier and dizzier while you’re taking metoprolol succinate (Toprol XL). Alcohol can also make the medication get released from the capsules (brand name Kapspargo Sprinkle) faster than usual and raise your risk of side effects.

Is it better to take this medication at night or morning?

Your very first dose of metoprolol succinate (Toprol XL) might make you feel dizzy, so you should take it at bedtime. If you don’t feel dizzy after that, then you can start to take it in the morning.

How fast does the medicine work?
