What is Avandia?

Avandia is a type of antidiabetic medication known as thiazolidinedione. It is commonly prescribed for diabetes patients to help control blood glucose level and reduce the amount of circulating insulin. Formulated with rosiglitazone as its active ingredient, Avandia is able to enhance insulin sensitivity, thereby improving glycemic control. Avandia is a prescription medicine manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, a pharmaceutical company based in the United Kingdom.

What is it used for?

The main function of Avandia is to improve glycemic control. Avandia is indicated for patients with type II diabetes as an adjunctive statement to exercise and diet. Due to its unique mode of action (which requires the presence of endogenous insulin), Avandia is not effective in treating those with diabetic ketoacidosis and type I diabetes mellitus. It is not advisable to use Avandia concurrently with insulin, as this may increase the risk of developing severe cardiovascular conditions. It is also not recommended to use this drug in patients younger than 18 years of age.
