Description
CRESTOR (rosuvastatin calcium) is a medication prescribed to treat low cholesterol in patients with one or all of the following conditions:
- Atherosclerosis, to slow the progression
- History of heart attack, stroke, or arterial revascularization in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD)
- Primary hyperlipidemia and mixed dyslipidemia
- Hypertriglyceridemia
- Dysbetalipoproteinemia
- Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
CRESTOR works by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, which is an enzyme that helps to produce mevalonate, a precursor of cholesterol. CRESTOR also works by reducing the number of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) and VLVL (very low-density lipoprotein).
Reducing cholesterol has been shown to lower the chance of cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke.
