What is Pravachol Used For?

Pravachol (Pravastatin)

Pravachol is a medicine that belongs to a class of drugs known as HMG CoA reductase inhibitors or statins. It reduces the level of triglycerides or unhealthy cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein or LDL) while promoting levels of good cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein or HDL) in the blood. Regular use of this drug decreases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other heart problems in people who suffer from coronary heart disease. This medicine can be used by adults and children who are over 8 years old.

Follow the instructions of your doctor regarding dosage as he may occasionally change the dose for better results. Read and follow the instructions on the label carefully. Usually, one tablet is taken daily, with or without a meal. The dosage of Pravachol depends on age as children and teenagers are given a lower dose than adults. For children that are 8 to 13 years of age the usual dosage is pravastatin 20 mg daily while children that are 14 to 18 years of age, the usual dosage is pravastatin 40 mg daily.

You may need to stop taking this medicine if you experience the following:

  • Severe illness or infection

Side Effects
